The Benefits of Teaching Progressive Coding to Children

At My Place, we make STEAM programs and technology education part of our everyday curriculum, and we’re proud to offer progressive coding for students as early as our Toddlers program.

Why teach progressive coding to children?

Our world relies on technology, and it’s hard to imagine a day that isn’t affected by it. Technology-focused careers are more common than ever, and there is no sign of that trend stopping.

At My Place, we prepare our students to successfully navigate their world by teaching STEAM concepts, such as progressive coding. This introduces fundamental coding concepts and then builds on those skills with increasingly complex activities. Studies show that progressive coding teaches skills for future success. It helps strengthen skills in math, reading, spelling, and problem-solving.

When kids learn how to write and understand code, they not only develop cognitive skills, but also learn the problem-solving process. This process involves using pattern recognition to present the problems in different ways while logically breaking them down into parts and creating the steps needed to solve them.

Ways to teach progressive coding to children

There are a variety of fun and engaging toys and games that teach children coding technology. At My Place, some of the tools we use to supplement our STEAM education are:

  1. Root, a robot that drives and moves according to drawn and erased lines

  2. Fisher-Price®Think & Learn Code-a-pillar Twist™, a preschooler-friendly toy that allows children to program a route for the caterpillar by twisting dials

  3. Qobo, a robot that glows, moves, sings, and dances according to puzzle cards recognized by a reader underneath the robot

  4. Ozobot, which can be programmed to follow patterns on a surface.

At My Place Early Learning Center, we provide a trend-setting progressive coding curriculum that allows your child to learn through playing. Students will learn the basic foundation of coding through patterns, colors, and sequencing. We’re proud to offer STEAM programs and technology as early as our Toddler program.
