Fun and Educational Outdoor Activities

Fall is nearly here, and that means fun and educational activities your child can do outdoors. Here are some family-friendly educational outdoor activities you can take part in in the Katy community and at home.

1.    Go on a nature walk. Fall is an ideal time for your child to learn more about nature. One fun way to do this is to take a family walk to collect fallen leaves, spot migratory birds, or notice any changes in flowers and plants.

2.    Go birdwatching: Depending on the age of your child, you can either simply point out different birds you see together, or create a checklist of common birds in your area that your child can look for. To make it more fun, you can create “binoculars” out of toilet paper or paper towel rolls and string.

3.    Visit a farm. Your local farm can help your child learn about animals as well as the seasonality of food. Near Katy, Dewberry Farm features farm animals, delicious food, an 8-acre corn maze, and over 40 rides and attractions. Dewberry Farm’s Fall Festival lasts until November 3, and the whole family can paint pumpkins, enjoy attractions, meet animals, and more.

4.    Visit a farmers’ market. Another way for kids to better understand the seasonality of food is by visiting a local farmers’ market. This is an immediate way for children to understand where our food comes from, and to even ask questions of the people who grow this food. The Farmers’ Market on Grand Parkway is on every Saturday in Katy.

5.    Plant a fall garden. Keep your child’s food education going in the garden! Have your child help you plant fall-friendly vegetables such as spinach, radishes, carrots, and kale.

6.    Create a sculpture: With sticks, rocks, and leaves in abundance, the great outdoors can hold endless possibilities for your child to create a sculpture. Encourage their creativity, but continue to teach them about being gentle and respectful of nature.

7.     Make art with sidewalk chalk. A classic outdoor toy, sidewalk chalk is an ideal way to encourage your child’s creativity and help them learn colors and shapes.

With these 7 fun and educational outdoor activities for children, the whole family can take advantage of fall weather and make memories.
